Document Summary

3 types: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive, combined. If have 6 of each then you are combined. Hyperactivity: squirms and fidgets, can"t stay seated, runs/climbs excessively, can"t play/work quietly, on the go/ driven by a motor , talks excessively. Impulsivity: blurts out answers, can"t wait turn, urge to act out is not inhibited. Present before 12years of age: used to be 7y/o in dsm 4. Maladaptive/interfere and inconsistent with developmental level (social, academic, occupational) If you are quite happy and bubbly and it doesn"t affect your life in a negative way then you will not be adhd. Need to rule out anxiety, something in environment and other things. Biological: hypo (below norm) activity in frontal lobe, basal ganglia thalamus, parietal cortex, lack of dopamine, lower than normal norepinephrine activity in pfc. Most know how to control their symptoms. 25% have come sort of learning difficulty. Brain development is behind those without adhd: social functioning.
