Force that acts between two surfaces on contact. For friction to occur there must be applied force perpendicular to the surface plane. If you have a box placed on a flat surface, there is no friction (but there is a potential friction) If this same box is pushed slightly to the right, a friction force is pushing back to the left, negating any change in position: however, you push a little more and the box does move (dynamic friction) The magnitude of kinetic friction is constant and lower than the maximum static friction: friction is greatest just before the object moves (static friction) The force applied is exactly equal to the force of friction. Greater surface area does not increase friction. If you have a smaller box vs a bigger box, there is no difference in friction. Whether motion is occurring (static vs dynamic) The magnitude of the normal force: vertical forces acting on the object (gravity)
