Document Summary
Electroencephalogram (eeg) invented in 1931 which detects brain activity: used to determine different levels of sleep characterized by different levels of brain waves. Stage 1 (5%): theta waves prominent: hypnic jerks, random twitching of limbs (feeling of falling, hypnagogic state. Stage 2 (50%): sleep spindles and mixed eeg activity: lasts 10-20 minutes, high frequency, low amplitude. Slow-wave sleep (stage 3 [6%] and 4[14%]: hard to tell the two stages apart, delta waves progressively increase, low frequency, high amplitude. Dreaming can occur in all stages of sleep, but they differ in quality and feature: rem is obviously the most vivid and bizarre. Rem periods progressively get longer, the last one right before you wake up is the one you typically remember. Purposes of sleep: sleep serves a restorative function allowing us to recover from physical and mental exertion throughout the day. Slow wave sleep (sws) is implicated in the restoration process.
