Document Summary

Week 5 lecture 1 oct. 9th, 2013. Tough guise hiding what they are actually feeling. The idea that men need to adopt a hyper-masculine posture in order to gain credibility. Influenced by the work of raewyn connel: masculinities are actively and socially constructed. Dependent on the social, political and economic text. Hegemony masculinity: dominant form, most culturally valued. Include heterosexuality, whiteness, physical strength, suppression of emotions, independence. Complicit masculinity: still white, see what is going on around them and don"t do anything to stop it or intervene, partakes in some dominant traits, admire hegemonic masculinity, not the strongest or toughest. Subordinate masculinity: opposite gay or effeminate men, weak or expressive with emotions. From the heroic artisan and genteel patriarch, to a marketplace manhood". Capitalism now drives gender identity: wealth, power, status, and the ability to conquer all tht he comes across proves a man"s worth and masculinity. Ideas of masculinity: media, historical, music, video games.
