Some pairs of genes did not segregate randomly according to mendel"s principle of independent segregation. Observed that some genes were not segregating independently. Genes are coupled or linked if present on the same chromosome (inherited together) Close linkage (rare recombincation) = close together. Recombination frequency (rf) = recombinants/total = 50% Recombination is the sorting of alleles into new combinations (resulting progeny allele combinations are different from the parent combinations) Recombination frequency is the percentage of recombinant gametes over the total. Alleles of genes on the same chromosome are coupled or attached to each other. If true linked alleles would be inherited together. Progeny would always inherit parental allele combinations. Expected if y & w are inherited together: Expected rf = recombinants/total = 0% - no differences in the progenies than in the parents.
