Cultures vary in the ways that parents deal with their children. Anorexia nervosa: one refuses to maintain a normal body weight, be fearful of weight gain and deny the seriousness of one"s low body weight, females miss 3 consecutive menstrual cycles. Bulimia nervosa: one indulges binge eating and then engage in behaviors to prevent weight gain such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives or excessive exercise) Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are culture bound syndromes, but anorexia may be considered universal even tho it might have some cultural factors linked with it. Koro (meaning: the head of a turtle) fear that one"s penis or nipples are shrinking into one"s body culture bound syndrome (bc it is absent in most cultures) Acute outburst of unrestrained violence, associated with indiscriminate homicidal attacks, preceded by a period of brooding and ending with exhaustion and amnesia. Primarily occurring in males, instigated by stress, lack of sleep and alcohol consumption.
