Claudius and nero: had the backing of the praetorian guard, was finally approved by the senate despite their dream of restoring the republic. Instead, he was a scholar and wrote various books on roman history (none of them survive) In order to legitimize his reign, he emphasized his family ties - especially on coinage. They were allowed to create their own coinage: militarily, he added to the extent of the empire. Rome: was granted the victory title britanicus, and he passed the title to his son, cleaned up caligula"s mess regarding the jews. In 53, agrippina was able to secure nero"s marriage to his cousin octavia. Agrippina (mom), octavia (wife #1), and poppaea sabina (lover and wife #2) Just like claudius, nero had trouble with the women in his life: his mother agrippina had a strong personality, and she was the sole reason for his accession to the throne.
