Only when the exact words the author used are important: paraphrasing. Expressing someone else"s idea in your own words. You must cite who the idea belongs to, even though it"s in your words. When you want to share someone else"s idea, but the exact words are not critical e. g. , stating author hypotheses or conclusions: summarizing. Absorbing the meaning of something, then distilling it into 1-3 sentences, in your own words.
