Modified martin"s theory to explain higher rates of delinquency among lower class youth. Cohen said lower class delinquency occurred as a adaptation to problems generated by domination of middle class culture. Agrees north american society encourages high aspirations but makes it difficult for some group to be successful. Middle class children socialized to be motivated, articulate, polite; all characteristics that work great in school and advantages them. Lower class value norm do not meet standards of school - dis advantages them - They are not able to compete effectively and fail to achieve middle class status causing status frustration. Converted durkhiems anomie/suicide into general theory of social deviant. M said people know what it is to be successful --> making money/material possessions. Pple assess their social worth by their material success. Typically culturally defined goals of success/material gain align with institutionalized means of obtaining them (i. e education on work)
