Major types of evidence for disease in the past. Mummies are not limited to ancient egypt. The study if disease and injury in the human skeleton (& sometimes mummies) Age of the individual younger children & older adults. Skeletal sample is not the same as a sample of living people. Not everyone is buried in the cemetery. Most infectious diseases will only affect the skeleton in the chronic phase. Only a small percentage of people will exhibit skeletal lesions. Someone has to have a good immune response to have bone involvement from infections: need to survive long enough for disease to show in the bones. Expansion of the diploe the flat surface of the inner and outer layers of the skull. Related to iron deficiency anemia: some contest that it is caused by megoblastic anemia. An increase of dental caries in agricultural populations: more sugar intake from increased carbohydrate intake, more acid production.
