Important to remember that alcoholism is not seen as a disease in the 18th. Mid 18th century, knowledge of alcohol"s impact against body and social interaction. Alcohol became emblematic of gender and class conflict. Alehouses were home to a lot of prostitution and other criminal activity like theft. A lot of concern around gin in the gin craze . British breweries form, good way to use up excess grain. 18th century, cheapest available liquor is gin, became a working class drink. 18th century, beer and ale only allowed to be sold in licensed places, however gin was not easily regulated, so it was easier to retail it. It could be found in street stalls and backrooms. Production of gin highest level between 1723 and 1757, 3. 5 million gallons produced. Good way for middle class to move itself away from higher class (high alcohol consumption) and lower class (high gin consumption)
