Document Summary

Week of october 1st : dna, the stuff of heredity. In first half of 20th century, many scientists believes that proteins were hereditary molecules b/c offered greater opportunities for info coding than nucleic acids 20 types of amino acids, nucleic acids = 4 different nitrogen bases. Other scientists believed dna was hereditary molecule. 12. 1a experiments begin when griffith found substance that could genetically transform pneumonia bacteria. Used bacterium streptococcus penumoniae causes severe pneumonia in mammals. Used 2 strains, smooth strain (s) and rough strain (r), s strain has polysaccharide capsule whereas r strain doesn"t. S strain virulent (highly infective, or pathogenic) and r strain is avirulent. B/c s strain has polysaccharide capsule it inhibits host"s immune system & can therefore multiply & cause fatal pneumonia capsule responsible for s strain"s virulence: experiment 1: mice injected w/ live s cells, result: mice die. Live s cells in blood: experiment 2: mice injected w/ live r cells, result: mice live.
