Looking like something presupposes the concept of being something. Appearances and the notion of being comes first. At first blush, sellars" thesis is threatened by this truth": x is red if and only if x looks red in standard conditions. This schema seems to be a definition: x is red if and only if df x looks red in standard conditions.
