When subjects receive either level a or level b, but not both conditions. Comparisons of level a and b will be a contrast between two dif groups of ppl: advantage: Avoid letting the subjects clueing what the study is testing about (because sometimes demand characteristics will be a problem in wsd: when encounter certain conditions, have to use bsd, when iv is a subject variable. Eg: when testing the gender dif in math, you cannot let one person go under both conditions (male, female). There are individual differences among groups (dif between the conditions could be due to the iv, but they might also be due to dif between the two groups: solve the problem: Disadvantage #2: to create equivalent groups, there groups are equal to each other in every important way except for the levels of iv: the problem of creating equivalent group, random assignment: Definition: each subject has an equal chance of being placed in a group.
