Evaluates how an individual peercieves the impact of external rewards and thus the effects this perception has on his/her intrinsic motivation (enhance it or undermine it) Tis depends on the individual, they chose what the reward means to them. A subtheory of self-determination theory (ryan & deci, 2000) 3 basic psychological needs; effectance, relatedness and autonomy. Thus a reward van be perceived to have a controlling or an informational function. If one goes at free will thus internal, it enhances internal motivation ii) if reward is perceived to be giving information about ones competence. It can also diminish perceived competence get decreased. Salience the importance attributed to a reward will be determined how it is going to be perceived by the recipient (diagram on page 143 of the text book: other empirical propositions: The gender of the reward recipient influences the interpretation of the reward this is gradually changing in todays society.
