Rene descartes: philosopher, not a psychologist. Interested in human behaviour, and how the body works -> reflex arch. Gustav fechner: author, philosophy and religion, came up with a way of measuring sensory experience -> his methods are still used today. Wilhelm wundt: founder of psychology, 1879 -> first psychology lab, his work is on structuralism, and experiences. William james: studied at harvard, write the first textbook of psychology, bit of a functionalist, tried to get mary calkins into harvard. Sigmund freud: a physician, not a psychologist, studied hysteria. Carl rogers: humanist, need to think about people who have value systems, rogerian approach to therapy.
