Kinship is a set of principles that cover significant issues: Unilineal descent (traces descent through either mother"s side or father"s side but not both) = people who trace their descent through men. Positions groups in relation to each other. = the future of the lineage depends on people who do not belong to it. = people who trace their descent through women. = the contradiction between the rule of residence and the rule of inheritance. Every society has ways of matching the right groom with the right bride. Parallel cousins = incest (children of father"s brother or mother"s sister) Patrilocal- newly married couple must live with the groom"s family/community. Polygyny- man with multiple wives (may all live in household) Dowry- transfer of wealth from parents to a young women. Different kinds of families: nuclear family direct family(mom, dad, parents, polygynous family , extended family, joint family- looking after spouse"s children. Ju/hoansi- face descent through mother and father (bilineal)
