Document Summary
Lecture 13: uhc chapter 3 - language (october 18th, 2013) Its meanings reside in the minds of people, not in words themselves. Understanding the rules of language helps us understand one another. Phonological rules: govern how words sound when pronounced. Syntactic rules: govern the structure of language, the ways in which symbols can be arranged as opposed to the meanings of those symbols. Semantic rules: deal with the meanings of specific words, as opposed to its structure. Pragmatic rules: govern how people use language in everyday interaction. *beyond simply expressing ideas, language can be very powerful. It can shape our attitudes toward things and toward one another. The power of language shapes the ideas and attitudes. Naming: is more than just a simple means of identification. Names may shape the ways others think of us, the way we view ourselves, and the way we act between each other. Credibility: our speaking style influences the listener"s perception.
