CMST 1A03 Study Guide - Conceptual Metaphor
Document Summary
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. The essence of a metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another. We are not aware of our conceptual system. Were not aware of how we are influenced because it happens every day and subtly and we act automatically as a result of these subtle influences. We see the person we are arguing with as an opponent, we attack his position and we defend our own. A battle characterizes the argument and the language follows suit. Metaphorical expressions in everyday language give us insight into the metaphorical nature of concepts that structure our every day activities. Time has a value and has is considered a commodity. Time is valuable because it is not unlimited and is required for us to accomplish anything.
