Perhaps others have much to teach us! The origins of the west : but it has origins outside the west . Education by state: both men & women. Focus of education: training in: discipline, stamina & fitness, technical abilities with weapons. Military pervades all parts of daily life culture: music, poetry, drama, dance& gymnastics, preparation for citizenship. Epicureans (one large group with one teacher) Sophists & rhetoricans: taught you how to always win an argument, they didn"t believe in truth or wisdom. Stoics: emphasized restraint and avoidance of pleasure. A school offered education based on a particular set of beliefs or values: not just school, but a way of life, relationships between teachers and students were quite intimate. A) music: inner harmony & balance (inner personality or emotional well being)
