Psychodynamic theories of personality view human behaviour as a dynamic interaction between the conscious and unconscious mind, including associated motives and conflicts. Free association: in psychoanalysis, a method of exploring the unconscious in which the person relaxes and says whatever comes to mind, no matter how trivial or embarrassing. Psychoanalysis: freud"s theory of personality that attributes thoughts and actions to unconscious motives and conflicts; the techniques used in treating psychological disorder by seeking to expose and interpret unconscious tensions. Unconscious: a reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories. According to contemporary psychologists, information processing of which we are unaware. Some thoughts we store temporarily in a preconscious area from which we can retrieve them into conscious awareness. Ego mostly conscious; makes peace between the id and superego. We repress, or forcibly block unacceptable passions from our consciousness because they would be too unsettling to acknowledge.
