Psychology comes in to the study of the envt when we are dealing with people: e. g. need to make new technologies people-friendly so it is easy enough for us to use. Envtal psych ranges from the micro scale of small groups to macro scales of civilizations; covers many diff layers of society. This field is becoming an applied social psychology. The psychological distance b/t you and the problem (geographically, time-wise) is a huge barrier when it comes to finding solutions; e. g. i"ll be dead by the time this happens. Don"t need to make the envt relevant to people b/c it already is relevant to people; this is because something is important to everyone, and that something is connected to the envt. The envt is inescapable, but somehow it has escaped our conscious awareness. 1 test (3rd last week of class) 40% 2 papers for the group project (described below) 60: barriers and benefits analysis (15%)
