Document Summary
Chapter 3: perceiving ourselves and others in organizations. Self-concept refers to an individual"s self-beliefs and self evaluations. Who am i? how do i feel about myself? . We compare our images of that job with our current (perceived self) and desired (ideal self) images of ourselves. How ppl perceive themselves helps to explain their attitudes, motivation, decisions, and behaviour in the workplace. Complexity- the number of distinct and important roles or identities that people perceive about themselves. (ex: student, friend, daughter) High self-concept =helps ppl adapt, well being, less stress, more self-confidence and self-esteem, vital for leadership roles. Low self-concept= lower absenteeism, perform better, more concentration, role flexibility. Four processes that shape self-concept and influence a person"s decisions and behaviour: self-enhancement- a person"s inherent motivation to have a positive self-concept (and to have others perceive him/her), such as being competent, attractive, lucky, ethical, and important.
