Responsible for the production of estradiol and progesterone after ovulation in order to inhibit further cycles in anticipation of pregnancy, where estradiol and progesterone will be produced by the placenta. Synthesize androgens: two layers are found, the theca interna and the theca externa, analogous to the leydig cells of the testes, external to the basement membrane of the follicle. Secrete estrogens (and inhibin), after receiving androgens from the thecal cells: analogous to the sertoli cells of the testes. Internal to the basement membrane of the follicle. Spermatogonia (germ cells) mitosis primary spermatocyte. First meiotic division secondary spermatocyte second mitotic division spermatids spermatozoa (sperm cells: spermatogonia (germ cells) Develop between the sertoli cells at the basal lamina of the seminiferous tubule. Migrate as they mature into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule: spermatozoa (sperm cells) Stored and undergo final maturation in the epididymis. Secrete androgens: analogous to the thecal cells of the ovary.
