G1/s checkpoint: prevents cell from replicating their dna if it is damaged, this checkpoint is monitored by cdk (cyclin-dependent cynase) a protein. Enzyme that phosphorylates targets, but cdk"s are only active when they are bound to other proteins called cyclins: cyclins are called cyclins because their production cycles with the cell cycle. Cdk and phosphorylating downstream proteins to release the g1 checkpoint. Another set of cyclin/cdk complexes to release the next two checkpoints as well: role of proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes and oncomirs in cancer. Cells need to be responsive to the environment need to know when to divide or not.
