September 26 hollywood as a genre system. Genre movies are commercial movies, through repetition and variation, tell familiar stories w/ familiar characters in familiar situations. Encourage expectations & experiences similar to those of similar films we have already seen. Genre films reproduce relationships in society (class,race,etc) Westerns are usually set between 1865 and 1900. Usually take place between mississippi river and pacific ocean. Civil war ended and slavery was abolished. Frontier stories of james fenimore cooper in early 19th century. Dime novels of 1880s after which provided (pulp fiction) a fascinated urban public with tales of the wild west and its outlaw hewers. Wild west shows - beginning 1883 a man named buffalo bill cody brought his circus like show to audiences in eastern us and to europe. Natives or outlaws who threaten the first group. Character narratives, revenge narrative and capacity narratives. Last town has whore houses, saloons, outlaws. Idealize the last town---establish christian values in civilization.
