Criminology = the sci study of the nature, extent, cause & control of criminal beh. Criminologist = one who brings objectivity & method to the study of crime and its consequences. Criminology is the sci approach to the study of criminal beh. Most imp areas of int to criminologists = development of crim law & its use to define crime, the cause of law violations & the methods used to control crim beh. The punishment given for crimes can be divided into two categories, the severity of punishment and the certainty of punishment. The severity of punishment means the sanctions a criminal may face, these range from low severity such as parole, community service and low fines, to high severity such as lethal injection, long prison sentence and high fines.
