In the 1970s, lesbian mothers who had had children in heterosexual unions and came out afterward became visible in the courts while fighting for custody of their children (368) Many chose to relinquish custody in exchange for liberal access due to the political climate of the time (368) In these court battles, lesbian and gay parents had to present themselves as just the same as and just as good as an ideologically based notion of the heterosexual nuclear family (368) Parents had to respond to arguments that their lifestyle would damage their kids (368) They had to stick to that framework and explain how their kids would be just like kids growing up in heterosexual families (368) Today queer families continue to struggle with having to prove that their families are. Such families feel the need to prove their sameness and deny their differences so their children will be accepted (369)
