Marriage is not a static concept it has varied throughout cultures and histories. Female sexuality was historically deemed a problem, so marriage was a way of controlling that. Honeymoon became an object of mass consumption. Associated with travel, leisure, and increased disposable income. Depended on strict gender roles (and assumptions about male and female pleasure) Problem of don"t rape your wife men were allowed to do this, since women weren"t even thought to be capable of giving consent. Scripted people had to follow a specific social honeymoon script. The honeymoon is considered vital to a healthy marriage, which is vital to the family and vital to societal function. The honeymoon introduces the discourse for normal vs. abnormal (homosexuals must be pathologized in contrast to the happy heterosexual there had to be a demonized other abnormal must exist to recognize the normal) Shows us how sexuality is learned, acquired, ritualized, and performed.
