Office hours: monday 2:30-3:20 pm tuesday 10:30-11:20 pm or by appointment. We start with a brief review of the fundamental changes in the recent past, globalization, and social capital. We critically evaluate conventional gdp values to judge if these values are reasonable proxies of well-being in a given economy. We discuss issues concerning the environment, sustainability and environmental policies, because it impacts our long-term economic well-being. Before we analyze global poverty and income inequality, we look at the topic of the evolution of high income in canada and north america. Various aspects of global poverty issues are discussed and link between economic growth, employment and poverty reduction is also explored. We also cover economic issues of food crisis and oil crisis. We discuss the economic issues concerning population, growth, labour productivity and competitiveness of the canadian economy. After dwelling long-term growth policies, we evaluate our macroeconomic stabilization policies (both fiscal and monetary policies) with regard to short-term economic fluctuations.
