PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Memory Rehearsal, Memory Span, Internal Monologue
Document Summary
Storage the vast amounts of info that we acquire over our lifetimes must be stored. Long- term memory (ltm): vast, reference library, files, dormant, slow. List of 30 words, 1/s. Recall words in any order (free recall). Working memory is active: manipulating ltm. Should affect recency but not primacy: replace items in wm with intervening backward- counting task b/w learning and recall. Slow rate of presentation of words. Longer time to rehearse: group (1) presented words, immediately recall words. Group (2) presented words, 30s delay, recall words. Group (3) presented words, count backwards by 3 during 30s delay, recall words. The important distinction would then be that it is a state" rather than a place". Trade- off b/w accessibility and size. 7 2: capacity by chunking. Inner voice produces trace of pronunciation, auditory images created. Draws on the same mechanisms that are used for speech.
