PSYC 309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Phantom Limb, Pretzel, Mechanoreceptor
Document Summary
September 12, 2013 lecture 3 body representation. Lot of cortex devoted to moving hand, face, feet. Condition of impaired movement : a problem of imitating gestures on demand (conscious, there are different kinds of apraxia. Couldn"t put key in lock: not motor strip that is damaged, motor cortex is fine, not paralyzed, but if asked to gesture, doesn"t remember certain motions, not just strip that moves limb, how the brain coordinates movements. Possible exam question: from here, we"re concluding that the left side is critical for representing spatial location of hands and body parts. On tuesday, we saw a split brain patient, whose corpus callosum could not communicate. Should a split brain patient be able to imitate gestures/make other motions with their right hand if the representations are in their left hemisphere: yes, the patient should be able to do it.
