Document Summary

Drosophila is linear because there chromosome is linear. Ecoli is circular so we get a circular map: generalized transducing phage: a phage that sometimes packages bacterial dna instead of itself. This is a way to map genes in bacteria using viruses. Phage that infects bacteria and injects the dna. The dna is replicated and gets the bacteria that reproduce new phages. The phage needs to get the new phases and load the head with its own dna. However, sometimes the phage packs the head not with its own. There is recombination so the recipient ends up with part of the dna from the donor. The phages are even smaller than bacteria so they can only pack so much dna in the head. If there are two genes from the bacterium chromosome that end up the same phage head they must have been close together or small enough.
