PSYC 221 Chapter Notes -Endel Tulving, Anterograde Amnesia, Retrograde Amnesia
Document Summary
Long- term memory (ltm): system of memory that stores information for long periods of time. Korsakoff"s syndrome: condition that destroys areas of the frontal and temporal lobes, usually resulting in anterograde amnesia. Anterograde amnesia: inability to form new memories. Retrograde amnesia: inability to recall memories from the past. Long- term memory interacts with working memory to create our ongoing experience. How ltm encodes information: auditory coding, visual coding, semantic coding (most predominant) Serial position curve: a graphical function that shows increased memory for items at the beginning and end of a list. Recall this function from coglab results (see figure). Recency effect: tendency to have superior memory for stimuli presented at the end of a sequence. Items toward the end are still in stm. For example, a fill- in- the- blanks question is a test of recall memory, whereas a multiple- choice question is a test of recognition memory.
