SOSC 1910 Lecture : sosc1910 - Lecture 1
Document Summary
History plays a major role in how we have thought of the third world and hopefully an historical approach will help us rethink the idea of the third world. The world is not divided into neat compartments and therefore how we live here in north america greatly influences how people live in the third world and vice versa. And in time we will learn how third world conditions exist in the so called first world. We (those of us who live here) are not a homogenous category. It is important to examine the players involved without demonizing or pathologizing, and to explore the notion of cause and effect between actions and outcomes with respect to the policies on and of the third world. For those who have no actual connection with the third world to begin the process of realizing how what happens in the third world affects them in very deep ways, economically, politically, socially and personally.
