Psychological science is the study of the brain, mind and behaviour. Mind: mental activity: perceptual experience interacting with the world, biological processes nerve cells, neurons. Mind is what the brain does brain enables the mind. Unifying themes: psychology evolves a socio-historical context, related to life and society at large, wwii advertisements. Believe from nature but also nurture people"s experiences changes brain structure. Vs. easterners holistic thinking, personal weaknesses: people are often unaware the influences acting upon them, unaware of how events, memories, environment, other people, etc. can influence thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Automaticity of everyday life without effort or intent. Psyche + logos = psychology: study of the soul/mind, greeks believed the mind is separate from the body, philosophical and physiological influences. Edward titchener: student of wunt, believed in study of consciousness sum total of mental experience at any given moment, unlike wunt interested in describing conscious experience than explaining.
