Interval: a relationship between only two tones: consonant: the combination if the relationship between tones is simple and stable, dissonant: the combination if the relationship between tones is complex and unstable, key (or tonality): an established collection of chords, all centering on the tonic chord, a tonic chord (basically a key) can be either major or minor, minor keys incorporate more complex, dissonant harmonies, modulation: when a composer moves from one key to another, in the 18th and 19th centuries, composers seldom restricted themselves to a single key, even within a single piece of music, any pair of keys share at least 2 tones in common, and perhaps several chords, keys that share many common tones and chords are said to be nearly related, keys that share only a few common tones (and chords, if any) are said to be.
