What is abnormal: none of these approches are useful on there own. If its really common we wouldnt call it abnormal: has to be rare, problems, the cut off is subjective, statistically speaking someone really smart is abnormal but we arent going to try and intervene and fix that. Abnormalities and social norms: homosexuality used to be in the same category as murderers - 1952, ego-dystonic: my ego dislikes something about myself, something that causes me distress. 1987: the problem is the distress not that your gay, reparative therapy - trying to change someones sexuality - 2012/13, trying to ban, might not happen. Abnormality: the best definition we can do, uses all the points from above, biggest group that doesnt seek mental help - homeless and males, need to be aware there are alot of people not coming for help. An interesting example: cant diagnose someone of nicotine abuse.
