English 1027F/G Lecture Notes - Heterosexuality, Goblin Market
Document Summary
The poem advocates for same-sex relationships, speci cally those between women and for the value of a feminine domain outside the sphere of male in uence. The goblins fruit represents heterosexuality, and connotes male genitalia. After resisting male sexual advances, even to the point of attempted rape, lizzie returns to laura, with whom she has a relationship whose complete emotional and physical intimacy renders the goblin men unnecessary. When laura and lizzie kiss it relates to the eucharist when jesus asks them to eat and drink in remembrance of him. The poem has this idea of a female-female relationship. But the poem had to be socially acceptable. They both get married to men and have children. When laura wakes up she goes back to her old way and hugs lizzie but only once which brings her back to the regular sister relationship.
