POLB92H3 Lecture : Reading Summary.docx
Document Summary
Much like the debate in the tutorial, brumberg talks about the structural economic aspects of polish solidarity. He says that voluntarist aspects are very important too, but things like the poor economy ultimately lead to the collapse of communism. Things like communism lead to a very poor economy, and as a result the country suffered economically. This meant that the country needed money to fix the problems (due to growing human rights concerns) so they borrowed money from the west. This money resulted in debt and therefore meant that workers wages went down and prices went up (state controlled economy). The malia reading also talks about how the economy played huge role in the solidarity of poland. The solidarity movement was being shut down in the 1980s and the people behind the movement were being jailed. The country could not feed their people and thus more people supported the movement.
