Riesman has a historical understanding of human sociology, based on the progression of different stages of personality throughout history: Emerges from change between production economy to consumption economy. There"s something about us middle class, psychologically, moved towards new mindset. The middle class, in the emerging consumer culture, is rep of a new outer-directed personality. A person"s identity is now largely dependent on the perception of others what goods they are consuming for ex. Betty friedan, the problem that has no name (63) Women are unsatisfied with their roles, but feel ashamed because image states they should be. Dissatisfaction with the life of an american housewife. Revert back to before women were fighting for education and elections. Now don"t take enough school because want to find husband.
