Na (north america) hard for people to feel they belong without having a partner dating = security: research says that younger girls romatincally involved = more vunerable in academics and emotionally than girls who get involved later, dating is a social pressure but that is diminishing in modern day and it socializes youth, women tend to invest more than men = gender roles in the emotional area of every romantic relationship because women are taught to be more nurturing and understanding & feel they have less desirable alternatives outside their relationship: that exists in all social classes and cultures, because they feel they have less alternatives women work harder in relationships, dating is nonegalitarian in the beginning, social exchange theory applied: women with better resources can afford" to do less maintenance b/c (because) the man will have less desirable alternatives.
