MUSI 3380 Lecture Notes - Gregorian Chant, Drum Roll, Binary Form
Document Summary
Sturm und drang: prone to use the minor key. Symphony was super popular: haydn was top of symphonic genre. Public concert in 1700s: pot pourri, collection of different star performers. Lots of different styles: opera arias, movements from a concerto, piano sonatas, symphony. Dies irae: part of requiem mass (mass for the dead), day of wrath, gregorian chant. Symphony 103 (drum roll): slow has the dies irae and returns in coda, contrast between dark deep and happy bouncy, no musical connection between dies irae and light bouncy sonata. Monothematic: binary form, sonata form, same theme transposed. Interesting theme able to be repeated without exhausting it. Haydn used standard forms, takes framework to add novelties. Early symphonies are shorter, different orchestration, late symphonies have more advanced tonal language (chromatic, rhythmic exploration), less galant more difference but still focused on melody. Listened to haydn"s symphony 103 and symphony 92.
