SOC 1100 Chapter Notes -Auguste Comte, Symbolic Interactionism, Social Conflict
Document Summary
Sociological perspective: the special point of view of sociology that sees general patterns of society in the lives of particular people. Society acts different on different categories of people. Consider the number of children women have. Women in poor countries have less schooling -> less likely to use contraception. Freedom weakens social ties and thereby increases the risk of suicide. The rates are consistently higher for men than for women. 2 situations help people see clearly how society shapes individual lives: living on the margins of society and living through a social crisis. The greater peoples social marginality, the better able they are to use the sociological perspective. People at the margins of social life: women, gay and lesbian people, people with disabilities, very old people, are aware of social patterns that others rarely think about. Sociology shows us that our place in society shapes our life experiences.
