EDPSY 014 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Metacognition
Document Summary
Human memory model has 3 components: memory stores: sensory, working, and long term memory, hold info, cognitive processes: attention, perception, rehearsal, encoding and retrieval, move info from one memory store to another, metacognition: monitors and regulates both the storage of info and how the info is moved form one store to another. Phonological loop a short term storage system for words and sounds in working memory: rehearsal the process of repeating info over and over, either out loud or silently, w/o altering its form, keeps info in the phonological loop, holds as much info as we can say to ourselves in 1. 5 2 seconds. Cognitive load the amount of mental activity imposed on working memory: two contributing factors, number of elements you must attend to, the extent to which the separate elements of incoming info interact with each other, reducing cognitive load, chunking the process of mentally combining separate items into larger, more meaningful units.
