Document Summary

A reconstruction of aristotle"s justice from sandel"s justice. Michael sandel"s chapter on justice discusses aristotle"s vision of the two factors that constitute justice: purpose and honor. Aristotle believes that justice is made up of the relationship between telos which is the purpose or goal of an action and honor. In its most elemental form, justice is defined as giving people what they deserve. However, aristotle questions who in any given society deserves what. Telos takes into consideration the essence and nature of an action, or what is it that a person does. On the other hand, honor takes into account who or which virtues should be rewarded. Sandel used flute playing as an example of the tensions between these two factors. Aristotle would argue that the best drivers should receive the cheapest car insurance, because car insurance is a reward for safe driving. Thus, rewarding safe driving would create the greatest good for the greatest people.
