Document Summary
Sandel"s doing the right thing: three approaches to justice. In the first chapter of his novel, justice, michael sandel examines three approaches to justice in the modern world: welfare, freedom, and virtue. Initially, he defines justice as the way a society distributes the things we prize (19). One of the largest sacred aspects of human life is the idea of prosperity or the ability to thrive which can be categorized, for example, by one"s standard of living or economic success. This recycles into utilitarianism, which is how and why we should maximize welfare, or in essence, how we can live the happiest life (19). Sandel, are directly related to societal justice in terms of welfare. Next, he discusses societal justice in terms of freedom specifically the laissez-faire ideology versus the fairness ideology.
