Document Summary

Our results from the decomposition of potassium chlorate lab clearly indicate a release of oxygen. When we heated our potassium chlorate to the point of decomposition oxygen was released. We could see this by the bubbles produced in our water bath. The significance of our results is that you can produce oxygen gas. Submarines can use decomposition of sodium chlorate to produce oxygen gas used for breathing so there may be similar uses for the decomposition of potassium chlorate. The weight of our cooled test tube (after heating the mixture) was more than the weight before, which is impossible. Human error is most likely to blame for this mistake. If we would have used the same scale every time, only zeroing the scale once, or having the same person weigh the object each time all could have made the experiment more valid.
