Treatment of mental disorders: treatment, biomedical, psychotherapy therapies. Psychosurgery: like lobotomy, used to be for severe disorders, used before drug, neurotransmitters, most prevalent form of treatment of mental disorders. Only treated with a handful of different types of drugs: 3 classes of medications. Anti-psychotics: for schizophrenia/psychotic disorders: brain chemicals that communicate info between nerve cells, excitatory. 3 classes of drug treatments: anti-depressants, neurotransmitter disregulation. Side effects: dry mouth, constipation, sexual dysfunction, drowsiness, blurred vision, increased heart rate: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssres) As effective w/fewer side effects (but headaches, nausea, low sex drive) 55-70% show reduced symptoms: serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (nsris) Wellbutrin: how effective is drug treatment, the case for anti-depressants. Treating bipolar disorder: theory, mood stabilizers, lithium, mania from excess or disregulation of dopamine. Also used for epilepsy, migraines: treatment most effective when continuous and for mania, antidepressants also prescribed for depression. Fast acting, but not good for long term management.
