Arthur miller: modern tragedy of the common man. Is the play a tragedy: no, because willy isn"t as likeable as the typical tragic hero, yes, because willy has a tragic flaw. If you"re well-liked, success will fall in your lap: success = money, american dream = being well-liked. What part do biff and happy play: happy: makes good money, but is unhappy living in the shadows of biff, biff: willy puts pressure on him to succeed, which ultimately causes his failure. Ben does not actually exist in reality, only exists in willy"s mind. Linda: doesn"t get credit for anything she does (pay bills, care for home, etc. )
